Training to create a healthy and respectful workplace culture

Tanya Hunter

At a time when employees are reporting increased levels of stress and burnout,[1] it’s important for the workplace to have a positive effect on employee well-being.  One of the most important ways to do this is by fostering a respectful culture that supports positive interactions.

Effective staff training on values and appropriate behaviour at work is a key way to improve your organisation’s culture and ensure everyone is safe and respected at work. But done badly, it can make it employees feel like your organisation is just paying lip service to these concepts or just attempting to tick a box.

So how does an organisation make sure that training is substantial and effective?

If the foundation is good, keep building…

If your workplace is already a great place to be, training is an excellent way to celebrate and build on what is already working well, while ensuring that any niggling issues can be addressed.

Employee training works to:

  • Empower staff through transparency and knowledge
  • Provides a platform for staff to voice concerns and ask questions
  • Refreshes existing skills and knowledge

Here at Worklogic, we deliver our Upstander Training in-house to organisations, which promotes the idea of employees being active upstanders. Employees are encouraged to speak up if they see inappropriate conduct in the workplace, enabling organisations to address issues early and find solutions that work.

Creating boundaries and establishing standards when issues arise…

Where issues are popping up, training is an effective way to discuss them in a safe and supportive environment.  It gives employees the opportunity to explore the boundaries of workplace behaviour, shifting cultural standards, and new developments in workplace responsibilities.

Over the last few years, Worklogic has been working with organisations to meet their obligations under the Positive Duty to Prevent Sexual Harassment Act. Since 2022, we have been providing training for managers and people leaders, as employers responsibilities shift and change.

Training leaders:

  • Promotes the use of Trauma Informed Approach to all employees
  • Understanding psychosocial hazards and how they can affect employee’s mental health
  • Knowledge of the overall responsibilities that managers have to all staff

Appropriate behaviour can be learned…

Where behavioural issues have cropped up, workplace training allows a reset and reminder of expected behaviours. It’s also a way to demonstrate that your organisation takes appropriate behaviour seriously and to provide your employees with skills to create a healthy workplace culture.

Behaviour training:

  • Promotes the importance of safe and respectful workplace culture
  • Understand employees’ obligations
  • Establishing standards of behaviour

At Worklogic, our team regular delivers Appropriate Behaviour in the Workplace training to organisations who are keen to establish a good foundation of appropriate behaviour and clarity around some of the implications that can occur if you don’t have a safe workplace

Worklogic can work with you to discuss the lie of the land in your workplace, and to tailor activities and case studies that allow employees to explore actual issues they experience in the workplace. We can help your employees to take responsibility for creating the culture and being upstanders to support and maintain that culture.

If you think your organisation needs training but don’t know where to start, our experienced team is more than happy to discuss what would be the best approach. Get in touch!
